Nintendo has just issued a short statement announcing that president Satoru Iwata has passed away at the age of 55.

The statement reads:

Nintendo Co., Ltd. deeply regrets to announce that President Satoru Iwata passed away on July 11, 2015 due to a bile duct growth.

Iwata who has been Representative Director (President) of Nintendo since 2002 was forced to skip last year’s E3 due to poor health, and had been undergoing surgery.

Iwata was one of the backbones of Nintendo and even cut his pay in half when his company fell short of fiscal projections in 2013.

The current remaining Representative Directors at Nintendo are: Genyo Takeda (Representative Director; Senior Managing Director) and Shigeru Miyamoto (Representative Director; Senior Managing Director)
