Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon says he loves Killer Instinct, but concedes a crossover title would have to be an Xbox One exclusive.
The champions of Earth realm have gone up against Superman and the Justice League in Mortal Kombat VS DC however fans want to know what’s coming next for Johnny Cage and the Mortal Kombat roster.
Responding to a fan recommendation for a potential Mortal Kombat crossover, series co-creator Ed Boon acknowledged that he loves the Killer Instinct franchise, but any possible crossover between the two properties would end up being an Xbox One exclusive as a result.
The most recent Killer Instinct (2013) was the first in the series published by Microsoft Studios and just saw a Windows 10 version in March this year. Any attempt to weave together the Killer Instinct with Mortal Kombat would need to go through Microsoft.
Fighting games lend themselves to doing crossovers in a way that other genres can find difficult. We’ve seen Marvel vs Capcom, Street Fighter X Tekken and as mentioned above, Mortal Kombat VS DC.
Fighting game fans are out there and are interested to see their favourite characters cross franchise boundaries and punch faces. The fact that Ed Boon specifically replied to a mention of the franchise is interesting news for fans waiting to hear about the next Mortal Kombat.
I loves me some KI but a crossover would have to be Xbox exclusive. https://t.co/bb69z4gQCw

Bear in mind, a tweet isn’t any sort of press release or confirmation. Boon and NetherRealm Studios aren’t going on record here, but it does indicate that Boon (like the fans) have been thinking about potential crossovers and the implications of making those deals.
Maybe There’s Another Way
If a full on Mortal Kombat VS Killer Instinct is too much to ask for, consider that it’s feasible some Mortal Kombat characters could make the jump into the Killer Instinct franchise.
Akin to Nintendo’s Super Smash bros, Killer Instinct pulls in guest fighters from other Microsoft properties. We’ve already seen Rash from Battletoads, Arbiter from Halo and General Raam from Gears of War, could we see some guest characters from outside the Microsoft stable?
In any event, Ed Boon will be busy for the time being finishing production on Injustice 2, the sequel to the popular Gods Among Us fighting game based in the DC Comics realm. The game was revealed shortly ahead of E3 2016, and introduces new elements to gameplay like stat-boosting loot drops.
With Injustice 2 scheduled to drop next year, it looks like any potential Mortal Kombat crossover is the subject for a distant release.
What do you think about the possibility of a Mortal Kombat and Killer Instinct crossover exclusively for the Xbox One?
