Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics showcased one of their earlier demos of the upcoming Tomb Raider reboot at last year’s EB GAMES EXPO.
The demo depicts a young, inexperienced Lara Croft, as she recovers from being stranded alone on a dangerously inhabited island, and does everything to survive from the hypothermia and starvation that she now endures.
Unclear of what the actual story line was about, I had the honors of talking with Ned Browning, the Export Brand Manager at Square Enix, as he explained the backbone behind this amazing title.
‘The game goes right to the beginning of series. Lara is twenty-one and she’s come straight out of college. She’s never been on an adventure before and decides to embark on board a ship owned by a friend of her uncles who is also the commander of the ship. Upon sailing they encounter a storm and she gets stranded on an island. The game then unfolds into a story of survival as well as the transformation of how a frightened young woman becomes a hardened survivor.’
Playing through the demo, there are elements that closely resemble the Unchartered series, mainly through climbing obstacles and the sense of exploration and game play.
Square Enix, developers of the Final Fantasy series, are also on board the creation of the game providing amazing environmental and overall game play graphics, giving the game an exciting visual adventure.
Tomb Raider‘s flexible aiming system is also explored as you try to find meat to heal your starvation.
Collectibles have been distributed within the levels adding more to the element of exploration. Collectibles and discoveries such as base camps, documents, relics, challenges, tombs, food caches and food plants are included to find which will expand overall game play.
Towards the end of the Tomb Raider demo and after clearing the objective to prevent starvation and hypothermia you earn survival points, which are used to purchase survival skills to help develop Lara into becoming a more effective survivalist.
