Saints Row: Gat Out Of Hell Review

Since the Saints Row series commenced we have followed the Stilwater, Michigan natives to the most ridiculous of environments- from the floating stag ship in Saints Row the third, to a Matrix style reality in Saints Row 4.  Now, when you thought these malicious criminals had well and truly run out of ideas, good old Johnny Gat decides to come and drag you into Hell.

Hell of a Game

Whilst many depict Hell as a violent place ripe with torture and destruction, Saints Row: Gat Out of Hell depicts it as a thriving place, replete with a social system, armies, a king, and even a job system.

This other worldly metropolis harbours menacing skyscrapers that are as black as the devils soul, vicious monster trucks that seem to thrive in this beastly world, and farms with ravaging tentacles protruding from the Earth.

There’s Evil in the Air

Unlike in the past Saints Row games where you can create your own character, this expansion throws you into hell as the notorious Johnny Gat, with the brains of the Saints Kinzie Kensington along for the ride.

Gat Out Of Hell pits these two heroes against hordes of the devils spawn with the goal of saving the boss from marrying the Devils daughter.

Gone When the Morning Comes

Considering the fact that Gat Out Of Hell is built upon the structure of Saints Row 4 the gameplay is very similar, excluding the driving, this is because your entry into the afterlife grants you mystical powers as well as a pair of angelic wings that allow you to propel yourself over the vast grounds of Hell.

These powers act as your main defence against the games enemies so as usual you can upgrade them to fit your specifications. Alongside the ability to upgrade your unearthly powers you will also gain the ability to obtain special upgrades for your wings, allowing you to perform aerial attacks or use less stamina during flight.

You will need to perfect you skills with your wings if you wish to take down the Devil

But when the day is done

Despite the two protagonists’ vicious powers, they will need a little help along the way if they wish to take down Big Red- assistance comes in the form of helping some more-than-famous folk such as Blackbeard and Shakespeare.

And The Sun Goes Down

However this is where the game falls flat, as these quests and missions consist of collecting certain objects and returning them to the person in question or surviving a certain number of enemies whilst the other collects the relevant component.

This would not cause too much of a problem if these linear missions were not mandatory in order to complete the campaign.

And The Moonlight’s Shinin’ Through

{rating}

Hell is an amazing environment that is matched only by your angelic wings that allow you to traverse the environment with ease but this new and unique environment does not counteract the linear missions and unsatisfying story.

Gat Out Of Hell surely has some intense and riveting moments, but these moments are few and far between.
