What We’ve Been Playing: August 2015

The start of a new month and the promise of many huge games. Before we get our hands on all the delights August has to bring, we take a quick peek at the games that are gracing our consoles.

Batman: Arkham Knight & Rocket League

I’ve just really finished playing The Witcher 3 and have other games to play too, however Batman: Arkham Knight and Rocket League have been taking up most of my spare time.

Batman: Arkham Knight

Arkham Knight has been a fitting send off to the Dark Knight so far, and I have been feeling almost a sense of nostalgia whilst playing, as sections feel similar to the previous two Rocksteady Batman titles. The gameplay is strong with multiple ways to tackle each scenario (gadgets, fists, Batmobile etc.), and traversing Gotham has never felt so cool.

The only slight annoyance in the game is that some of the side quests feel tedious (the ones that aren’t for supervillains), for example having to clear sections of the road with your Bat-tank, and having to disarm random mines. These do however add to the game’s lifespan, as well as DLC such as Batgirl, and re-playing.

Rocket League

A game I thought I’d never get into, Rocket League just might be the most fun I’ve ever had while playing a car-football simulator. This is because unlike some driving games it’s accessible to everyone and doesn’t get stale, due to it’s short 5 minute matches, fast and hilarious gameplay and customisation.

Playing games with friends is where Rocket League really shines however, as it can make for some intense matches where literally anyone can win. Definitely worth a download. (It’s free for PS+ on the PlayStation Store!)

Fallout New Vegas

So I haven’t actually been doing much ‘Playing’ of this. I’ve been getting it ready to play with mods before I delve into the world again. Unlike some more modern games, Fallout New Vegas doesn’t have Steam Workshop integrated so I’ve had to go old school and check out Nexus Mods. More importantly, I’m trying to get ‘Tales of Two Wastelands’ and ‘Project Nevada’ to work.

“Tale of Two Wastelands (TTW) is a project that seeks to merge the content from the popular video game Fallout 3 into the more modern game engine of Fallout New Vegas so that both games can be played in the Fallout New Vegas engine.”

So instead of playing the game I’ve actually been slowly making my way through an 8 part tutorial on how to get all the proper mods installed using Nexus Mod Manager AND Fallout Mod Manager. So I haven’t got it working yet, but it promises new weather effects, textures and new animations… Any day now I’ll get it… Hopefully before Fallout 4 launches.

Yoshi’s Woolly World

I spent of my week playing and the other half being dead. Because this game is the epitome of cuteness (with the possible exception of the Wii title Kororinpa). It’s a fusion between Kirby’s Epic Yarn and titles from the Yoshi series (e.g. Yoshi’s Story for the N64). Mechanically it plays very similarly to Yoshi Story with players using Flutter Jump and Egg Throw to traverse courses without dying. In lieu of trying to eat as much fruit as possible, there are now rolls of wool and happy flowers to find.

Finding all the collectible yarn in a level will unlock for you another style of Yoshi. There are, of course, the basic blue, green, pink Yoshi but more advanced and adorable patterns, such as Cookie Yoshi or Watermelon Yoshi.

Sure the Flutter Jump noise gets annoying after a while but the game is cute enough to destroy any thought processes, fun enough to play, and challenging enough to make you want to keep going. Co-operative play is handled well and it’s nice to see Nintendo get right what they got wrong for so long.
